Meet Nikki: North Carolina-based drummer, hunter, and avid lady angler!

Reel Girls: What type of fishing do you prefer? Saltwater or freshwater? (or both!)

Nikki: “II love the beautiful colors and the exciting sizes of the fish while saltwater fishing, but nothing beats the peace and quiet of a day of bass fishing out in the middle of the country!”

———————————————————————————————————————————————–

Reel Girls: When did you start fishing and what do you love about it?

Nikki: “My Uncle Stu taught me how to fish when I was a little girl, maybe 4 or 5, in northern Wisconsin. I love that fishing brings an array of emotions – from the calm of the night while waiting for a nibble (simply enjoying the company of those around you), to the excitement of feeling that first bite, to the adrenaline rush of reeling in your catch!”

————————————————————————————————————————————————–

Reel Girls: What is your go-to/favorite fishing gear set up while out on the water?

Nikki: “When fishing on one of the many ponds on our family’s property, I typically stick with the old reliable Zebco 33 and use a topwater lure such as a popper or frog.”

————————————————————————————————————————————————–

Reel Girls: What is the most desired species of fish that you want to catch but haven’t yet?

Nikki: “A Houndfish! During a recent fishing trip to Bermuda, I could see the beautiful, multi-colored Houndfish through the clear water, but didn’t have the good fortune to reel one in. I suppose that just means I’ll have to head on back to Bermuda to try again! :)”

————————————————————————————————————————————————–

Reel Girls: When you’re not fishing, what can we find you doing?

Nikki: “When I’m not out fishing, you can typically find me hitting the weights at the gym, shooting at the local range, or cuddling with my kitten, Greece!”

Reel Girls: Random fact about yourself – GO!

Nikki: “I am the drummer for the largest dueling piano bar in America – PLUS Dueling Piano Bar – located in Raleigh, NC!”

Reel Girls Inc. is incredibly excited to introduce the Lynne Cohen Foundation as a permanent partner of our brand! LCF is a Southern California-based organization that has a focus on prevention, education, and community for both ovarian and breast cancer.

As a family owned business with two little girls, Reel Girls wants to help aid in such a cause by donating year round. One percent of all gross profits will be given to the foundation in the hopes of gaining a greater awareness and building a community of strong women who encourage one another to educate themselves about the symptoms and preventative care for women’s cancers.

Lynne Cohen was a mom of four who dedicated herself to them and their life down in Southern California. At age 48 Lynne was diagnosed with metastasized ovarian cancer. Throughout her 5 year illness, she did everything she could to normalize her kids’ lives while spending every spare moment researching for possible resources and solutions for her diagnosis. She discovered that there was a lack of funding for research that helps in the early detection and prevention of ovarian cancer, so she set out to raise funds and awareness for others facing the same problem. In 1998, Lynne passed and her children created the Lynne Cohen Foundation in order to “honor Lynne’s legacy of persistence, love, and service in the face of adversity.”

“In order to effectively save and enhance lives, the foundation strategically focuses on early detection, prevention, education, and community. Had Lynne’s disease been caught in Stage 1, her chance of survival might have been as high 94%.  BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene mutations are associated with increased risk for both ovarian and breast cancer. Because of this inextricable link, the Lynne Cohen Foundation focuses on prevention and early detection for both diseases.” (Lynne Cohen Foundation)

THE FACTS

Ovarian and breast cancer are some of the most leading causes of death in women. Educating yourself and being aware of the early signs and symptoms is one of the most important steps in taking action.

Ovarian Cancer

1 in 73 women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer in her lifetime.

Only 15% of cases are caught early enough while 65% of those diagnose will lose their battle.

Symptoms for ovarian cancer include back pain, heartburn belly . bloat, fatigue, and more.

Breast Cancer

1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women over the age of 20.

Symptoms can include change in nipple appearance, sensation, abnormal lumps, and more.

WHY PARTNER?

All donations to the Lynne Cohen Foundation are made in the memory of a loving grandmother and remarkable woman, Nancy Cinquino. Nancy was diagnosed with breast cancer in the 80’s and lost her battle due to the lack of research at the time for prevention, education, and awareness. Not only do we remember Nancy, but we remember all of the women who have lost their lives to ovarian and breast cancers.
